Nazario Realpe

Farm: El Trapiche / Origin: Unión, Nariño.

Nazario Realpe is a traditional coffee farmer. He owns El Trapiche, a farm located at 1850 m.a.s.l in La Unión, Nariño. The mountainous characteristics makes this region suitable to grow specialty coffee. The environment and soil is perfect to the good development of the coffee cherries.

The picking process is a family ritual when harvest season arrives. Family members help Nazario by picking the ripe cherries. Once cherries are selected are put in bags, and later after 36 hours are depulped. Then beans are moved to plastic bags where cherries are fermented for 48 hours, afterward the cherries pass to the washing station and then to the raised beds. The drying process is done in a parabolic system and coffees are exposed to the sun light between 14 to 20 days.

Nazario has been producing coffee since he was a child. For him, the coffee  producing is a great opportunity since this allows him to get incomes that support the well-being of his family. Nazario is open to working with new varieties and processes in order to achieve better opportunities in the market.
